Just short of 40, Birgit held together a home with three children, an overbearing husband she adored. She spent four years as a senior manager in the controlling department of a Canadian financial services company and wanted only one thing. Her boss’ job.

It was 8:15 and still cold outside, when I first saw Leonie smoking in a huddle with the rest of the inductees. A business student fresh out of the university, she had a loose bunch of papers under her arm and was hopping from one foot to the other in the wind.

“Don’t be ridiculous. I can’t wear it to the office and I’m not going to wear it to the interview either.” Naima was shifting uncomfortably in her chair sipping her cappuccino. She was looking for a new position now that her contract was ending. With two young boys, an ambitious husband and her in-laws sharing a home, at 34 Naima seemed determined.
